The Edgecumbe Choir Incorporated is a community choir of men and women having the aim of encouraging the enjoyment of group singing and offering the public of the Eastern Bay of Plenty a high standard of choral music.

The Choir performs a wide range of music from the last five centuries, such as: carols, masses, oratorios, opera; as well as art, folk and popular songs and also musical theatre numbers.  Though much of the Choir’s repertoire is religious in origin; performances are often held in churches and its members individually belong to various religions and denominations, the Edgecumbe Choir itself is secular with no formal affiliation to any faith.

The Edgecumbe Choir, which has over 60 performing members, rehearses in Whakatane on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm for much of the year and occasionally on Tuesdays immediately before a concert.

Carol Singing 2004

It gives at least two public concerts a year.  Members’ singing development is encouraged with workshops and courses and there are also at least two major social events during the year.

Choir Social - February 2005

There are two types of membership.  Performing Membership is for men and women who wish to sing in the Edgecumbe Choir.  An ability to read music is very desirable.  Prospective members will be expected to undertake a low-key audition and will be allowed a probationary period of not less than three practices before a final assessment for membership is made.  The Choir is committed to improving its members’ abilities by encouraging and providing training.  Subscribing Membership is for those who would like to support the Edgecumbe Choir, but do not wish to sing.  As well as receiving generous discounts on ticket prices, Subscribing Members get newsletters and invitations to the Choir’s social functions.

For those who are 25 years old or younger, the Choir offers a very generous Youth Rate subscription for both Performing and Subscribing Membership.

To obtain a membership application form, please contact the Choir at the addresses given on the Home Page.
